Salary by occupation: questions

Where do these salaries come from?

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), which asks about 1.1 million employers what they pay each job. They are wages, not job-ad offers or self-reported figures.

What is the difference between average and median salary?

The average (mean) adds every wage and divides by the number of workers, so a few high earners pull it up. The median is the middle wage: half earn more, half less. For most jobs the median is lower than the average. More in our guide to median salary.

Why is my job missing in some cities?

BLS only publishes a city figure when enough employers report it and the estimate is reliable. Small metros and rare jobs often have no figure.
